Introduction
Greetings loyal readers! Welcome to the year 2000, not to be confused with the millennium. Of course, the year 2000 heralds a new numerological cycle – but so does every year! Actually, January 1, 2000 was a very significant date. It was the day of transcendence – a day when cosmic energies were harmoniously aligned for prayer and meditation. Planetary energies are preparing us for global healing and harmony. The early part of the 21st century will be a time of spiritual awakening, shifting consciousness and global healing. Let's start the party!
More on Pluto in Sagittarius
As regular readers and astrology students are aware, Pluto is in Sagittarius. Because Pluto is so far away from the Sun, it has a very large orbit. While the Earth circles the Sun in one year of our time, Pluto takes over 200 of our years to complete its solar orbit. Since the zodiac has twelve signs, Pluto spends several years in a particular sign. Thus Pluto's influence is generational – not personal – because Pluto moves too slowly to have an effect in an individual's chart.
Pluto is the planet of reorganization, restructuring and rebirth. Sagittarius is the mutable fire sign. Mutable signs are flexible and adaptive. Sagittarius is about expansion. It rules the law and the search for truth. When Pluto is in Sagittarius the truth comes out. Things that were secret while Pluto was in Scorpio (the sign of secrecy and manipulation) come out when Pluto is in Sagittarius. The reason this column keeps harping on Pluto in Sagittarius is because there are so many signs around us of the Archer's cleansing fire.
The event's surrounding last November's World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle are a perfect illustration of this principle. Although the major media news outlets did their best to slant and distort the actual events, alternative media sources such as Paper Tiger Television and Pacifica Radio were putting the word out. The mainstream news media portrayed the anti-WTO demonstrators as opposed to global trade and therefore stupid. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The demonstrators were not opposed to global trade at all. They were opposed to "free" trade (a code-word for continued planetary domination by the rich and greedy) and in favor of fair trade – trade that considers workers' rights and Earth's environmental needs.
While the vast majority of the demonstrators were peaceful, there were isolated incidents of window smashing and wanton destruction by so-called anarchists. The vast majority of the violence, however, was committed by the Seattle police force. The presence of the television cameras, both mainstream and alternative, gave the world the chance to see firsthand what a police state the United States has turned into.
Why is it that the police were standing around doing nothing while the so-called anarchists smashed windows and destroyed property, yet they cheerfully launched tear gas canisters and concussion grenades into crowds of peaceful demonstrators and beat them with night sticks? Could it be that the people smashing the windows were not demonstrators at all, but police provocateurs? I read an item on the New York Free Media listserve posted by a demonstrator who said that he saw people in the crowd who appeared to be demonstrators, and were shouting the same slogans along with all the other demonstrators, yet these supposed demonstrators suddenly started handcuffing people. I read another posting to the Black Radical Congress listserve by a California law professor who has spent his career speaking out against exploitation of labor by firms such as Nike. Suddenly this professor found himself joining with dozens of other demonstrators trying to protect Niketown from the alleged anarchists trying to smash Niketown's windows. What a surreal situation!!!
And not only did the police spray gas (some of which is alleged to have been Nazi-style nerve gas) directly into people's eyes and on their lips – anatomical areas with extremely sensitive and absorbent membranes – they committed hateful acts of torture by rubbing the gas into the demonstrators' eyes and lips to further increase the pain. Why in the world would anyone want to do such a thing? Tear gas is incredibly painful stuff. When it is sprayed directly into people's eyes they are in agony. Why in the world would the Seattle police deem it necessary to inflict more pain? What reason is there to explain such behavior other than psychotic hatred? (One can't help but be reminded of Justin Volpe repeatedly jamming a toilet plunger up Abner Louima's rectum while Volpe's friends in New York's 70th Precinct assisted him and then tried to cover the incident up.)
But the illegal acts of barbarism did not stop there. One demonstrator was beaten until practically unconscious for refusing to give his name. There is no legal doctrine requiring arrested individuals to identify themselves to their arresting officers. When it became clear that his illegal injuries were quite severe and that he could speak out about it and make serious trouble for the Seattle PD, they let him go. When lawyers showed up at the jail claiming to represent the demonstrators and demanding to see their clients, they were kept waiting for a few days – DAYS! – before they were allowed into the jails to see their clients.
The good news is that millions of people around the world were instantly able to get the truth through the Internet. Not only that, but the WTO talks were sufficiently disrupted that nothing meaningful took place. In fact, some of the WTO delegates from poor third world countries actually sided with the demonstrators! If that isn't a consciousness shift, I don't know what is.
The fact is that the WTO is a secret tribunal that acts only in the interests of the world's wealthiest corporations. These corporations have no respect for workers' rights and even less respect for the environment. The fact that the Seattle demonstrators were so well organized and so well informed is due entirely to the Internet. The demonstrators began planning and organizing a year in advance of the talks. The same kinds of activity will happen at the next WTO meeting, and the one after that, until the world's power brokers recognize that they cannot ignore the people forever. In fact, it is not inconceivable that, if the large multi-national corporations do not become more responsive to the needs of this planet and her people, there will be well-coordinate worldwide labor walkouts. Let's face it – corporate CEOs don't make organizations run. Workers do. Power to the people!
Political Predictions
I usually try to avoid making predictions this time of year, simply because it is expected. And I usually give in to people's exhortations to make predictions by the new Moon in Aquarius column (having successfully resisted the temptation to do so in the new Moon in Capricorn column). Well, this year I'm just going to bite the bullet and give in and make some predictions when people expect me to.
Years ago there used to be something in the mainstream media called journalism. These days actual journalism has all but disappeared from these platforms. This is because the focus of what passes for journalism has gone from a sincere desire to inform the public of current events to the overarching desire for profit. This is why there are daily stories in the mainstream news media about political candidates starting nearly two years before an actual presidential election. It certainly is not because newspaper editors believe that we want to read about presidential candidate stump speeches on a daily basis.
Since conservative Republicans control the mainstream media, they conduct their own biased polls and release this information as if it were true. The fact that such polls have been proven wrong over and over means absolutely nothing to them. Thus the mainstream news media wants us to believe that George W. Bush will be our next President. Fortunately the American people are generally much smarter than the fascist-controlled media believe them to be. As such, they are not going to elect someone as stupid as George Bush, Jr. Although Shrub Junior is as evil as his famous father is, fortunately for us he is nowhere near as intelligent, and thus not likely to follow his father's footsteps into the White House. And although all the polls show him to be the front runner, I would be surprised if he succeeds in getting the Republican nomination. (I predict that will go to Senator John McCain, as unlikely as that may seem at this point in time.)
Although Al Gore believes himself to be our next President (and wants the job so badly he can taste it), the fact is I still stand by the prediction I have been making since the early 90s -- Bill Bradley is going to be elected as our nation's leader in November. The fascist-controlled press loves to tout Dollar Bill as a liberal, but as a lifelong leftist I find this suggestion laughable. Isn't it interesting that Bill Bradley puts forth a proposal to lift half of this nation's impoverished children out of destitution? The fascist-controlled press touts this as a positively radical suggestion. However, true progressives scratch their heads exclaiming "Half? Why not all of them?" I would love to know how Mr. Bradley would determine which half gets the help. Is he going to toss a coin as he surveys all the starving children and say "You get to eat – you don't? You get health care – you don't. You get housing – you don't."
Of course, it would be nice if Bill Bradley decides to help all impoverished children once he gets in the White House, and his proposal regarding half the children is to make sure the conservative press actually prints his suggestion. Maybe he thinks that if he suggested helping all impoverished children the press wouldn't cover it. If so, he may be right.
If Bill Bradley comes campaigning in your town, go out and see him and see if you can get to ask him directly why he only wants to help half the children and how he would decide who gets help. Let me know what happens.
