Random Musings of a Renegade Shaman

     Introduction

Greetings loyal readers! Please forgive the lateness of this month’s column. In the nearly six (6) years that I have been writing this column, I have not yet missed a month. I certainly do not intend to start now! However, life has been getting the better of me lately. Commuting three (3) hours a day on top of nine (9) and ten (10) hour workdays is taking its toll. However, I have my priorities in order and am now devoting myself to my loyal readers!

     Happy Summer Solstice

Yes, the summer solstice has arrived and the days are long and hot. The longest days of the year are in those weeks before and after the solstice. Have you ever noticed that the days in the weeks after the solstice seem longer than the days in the weeks before the solstice? I think it has to do with the heat. It can be rather cold in the weeks before the solstice (for those of us in temperate climes, at any rate). Here in New York, we had 50-degree weather in late May. As I write this, one week after the solstice, the mercury is registering near 90 degrees – even after a short summer squall!

So why would the days seem longer in the hot weather? Could it be that warm weather affects our moods? There is extensive evidence in the scientific literature to support the fact that light affects our moods. People who live in valleys tend to become very depressed in the winter, as do residents of the far north (where there is almost no light in the winter and almost no dark in the summer). It is well documented that residents of nursing homes and senior citizen facilities experience seasonal depression in the dark months. Many of these institutions use light therapy with their residents to combat the depressive effects of the winter months.

However, I have never seen any studies evaluating the phenomenon of people perceiving the long days of May and June (before the solstice) as shorter than the long days of July and June (after the solstice). Here are some possible explanations. In the warm weather people wear fewer clothes, so they feel better. People also spend more time outside, which can also contribute to the perception of the warm days as longer. In addition, there are many more outdoor events in the summer, so people are not only spending more time outside, they are spending more time outside in the company of many people.

Now let’s expand our hypothesis in a more radical direction. Can the psychological perception of longer days after the summer solstice have anything to do with more people gathering together outdoors? The human nervous system is an electro-chemical system. The human aura is an electro-magnetic energy field. When you stand next to another person, you are in that person’s aura and are therefore picking up magnetic vibrations from that person. Magnetism is increasingly being used for healing purposes, because it works! Several companies are manufacturing pads, headbands, wristbands, ace bandages and other such objects with specially formulated magnetic strips that are used to relieve pain, boost energy and enhance one’s sense of well-being.

During the summer more people tend to be outside in the evenings, and they tend to be gathered together at outdoor events. Here in New York City we have wonderful outdoor concerts in Central Park, Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park and the South Street Seaport in Manhattan, at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, in Flushing Meadow in Queens and various other parks and gathering places around the city. We also have two (2) fine baseball teams playing in two different stadiums. Thus people are frequently packed into each other’s auras outside in the evening during the long days of summer. Can it be that this experience creates a sense of well being, thus enhancing people’s perceptions of the length of the days?

While it’s true that there are baseball games before the summer solstice, it still doesn’t feel as if the days are as long as it does after the solstice. Is it the warm weather, or the beneficent effect of many humans co-mingling their auras in a life-enhancing magnetic energy orgasm? Think about it and let me know your thoughts.

     Aliens Among Us

Recently I attended a lecture by the Rev. Michael J. Carter. The lecture was sponsored by the S.P.A.C.E. group, a UFO abductee-experiencer support organization. (S.P.A.C.E. stands for Search Project for Aspects of Close Encounters.) Rev. Carter just finished a master’s degree at Union Theological Seminary. His thesis was about UFOs and the Bible. Let me insert a brief footnote here – Union is probably the only theological seminary in this country where a thesis on this topic would be allowed. The theological community as a whole is incredibly hostile to the notion of UFOs being present in the Bible. Union is unique among seminaries in that it has a radical history. In the early part of this century there was an insurrection where the faculty took over the school because they didn’t agree with the academic direction being taken by the administration.

Not only is Union an interesting place (I lived in a dormitory there for an academic year), but Rev. Carter is an extremely interesting person. He was a mainstream Unitarian minister until he became a UFO experiencer. One night while his wife was asleep, he was awakened by a very bright light. An alien being was sitting at the edge of his bed. Rev. Carter said he did what any red-blooded American male would do in this situation – he pulled the covers up over his head and hoped it would go away. However, it didn’t go away. This began a series of experiences that transformed Rev. Carter’s life.

Michael told us he felt he has been deeply transformed through his experience with the aliens. He said it was not always painless and he was not always willing, but that he was expanded spiritually through interaction with the aliens, and he was grateful. His experiences caused him to leave his congregation and his denomination. (Rev. Carter is currently working as a chaplain at the Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn.) He began exploring his own powers of energetic and spiritual healing. He became a Reiki master. He had his head blown.

Rev. Carter also told us about a lifetime of fascination with the Bible and questioning things that were left unexplained. Through his alien experiences, Michael realized that the Bible was packed with references to UFOs and aliens. He realized that the many mentions of angels were actually references to alien beings from outer space. Here is Michael Carter’s list of Old Testament Biblical references to UFOs:

      Genesis, Chapter 6, Verses 1-4
Genesis, Chapter 9, Verse 26 (the word Shem means rocketship)
      Exodus, Chapter 13, Verses 21-24
      Exodus, Chapter 34, Verses 29-30
      Numbers, Chapter 12, Verse 5
      Numbers, Chapter 22, Verses 20-25
Second Kings, Chapter 2, Verses 1-12
      Psalm 104, Verse 2-4
      Isaiah, Chapter 66, Verse 15
      Jeremiah, Chapter 4, Verse 13
      Ezekiel, Chapter 1, Verse 2-11
      Zecharaiah, Chapter 5, Verses 1-12
      Zecharaiah, Chapter 6, Verses 1-6

Here is his list of New Testament Biblical references to UFOs:

      Matthew, Chapter 2, Verse 9
      Matthew, Chapter 3, Verses 16-17
      Matthew, Chapter 17, Verses 1-6
      Matthew, Chapter 16, Verses 13-14
      Acts, Chapter 1, Verses 9-11
      Acts, Chapter 9, Verses 1-8
      Acts, Chapter 10, Verses 11, 22 and 30-32
      Acts, Chapter 12, Verses 1-11
First Corinthians, Chapter 9, Verse 5
Second Corinthians, Chapter 12, Verses 1-4

I strongly recommend that you read all of the foregoing references and ponder their meaning in modern UFO experiencer terms. For example, Paul was blinded on the road to Damascus by the bright light of a UFO. He had to be led into town and he neither ate nor drank for three days. Moses shone after encountering the UFO at the top of Mount Sinai – his face shone with radiation, and his hair was bleached white through the exposure to the brilliant, blinding light. And Peter was sprung from prison by an alien who put the guards to sleep and undid Peter’s chains energetically, opened the iron gate leading into the city (which appeared to open of its own accord) and disappeared. The aliens certainly have many interesting gifts when it comes to energy manipulation, as many in the UFO experiencer community can attest.

I asked Rev. Carter whether he thought the Biblical account of the annunciation (where an “angel” visited Mary, mother of Jesus, and explained that the angelic world needed an ordinary woman to volunteer to become pregnant by being taken up into the sky and was she interested) was in fact a description of artificial insemination taking place on board a spaceship. (After all, how would you have explained artificial insemination and spaceships to people living in the Middle East 2,000 years ago?) Rev. Carter said he was “banking” on that explanation being correct.

Deepak Chopra was interviewed by Larry King about the news of the completion of the human genome. Dr. Chopra said he thought the drive to understand the genome was encoded in the genome itself – that the genome is programmed to want to study itself. Therefore, the entire process is explained by God, because God set it all in motion. This makes perfect sense to me. What makes even more sense is Zechariah Sitchin’s interpretation of ancient Hebrew texts in concluding that human beings have over 97% of their DNA in common with apes because humans were genetically engineered from the DNA of apes found on Earth and the DNA of extraterrestrials. The Biblical phrase “Man was created in God’s image” is more easily understood in the context of our extraterrestrial ancestors genetically engineering us to look like them.

So if our species was genetically engineered, it makes perfect sense that throughout the course of our own evolution we would be able to further genetically engineer ourselves. The question is whether we can be trusted to do so responsibly. After all, many fantastic things can be done with nuclear energy, but our leaders have chosen to make bombs with it. This does not bode well for the future of human genetic engineering. But we can continue to hope, to pray, and – most important of all – to organize. We need to not only make our feelings heard, we need to make them be respected.

Genesis 6 :1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Genesis 9 :26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

Exodus 13 :21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: 22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Exodus 34 :29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. 30 And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.

Numbers 12 :5 And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth.

Numbers 22 :20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do. 21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab. 22 And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him. 23 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way. 24 But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side. 25 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

2 Kings 2 :1 And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.2 And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel. 3 And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. 4 And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho. 5 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. 6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on. 7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan. 8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground. 9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. 10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. 11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

Psalms 104 :2 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain: 3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind: 4 Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:

Isaiah 66 :15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.

Jeremiah 4 :13 Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.

Ezekiel 1 :2 In the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of king Jehoiachin's captivity, 3 The word of the LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the LORD was there upon him. 4 And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire. 5 Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. 6 And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. 7 And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass. 8 And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings. 9 Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. 10 As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. 11 Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.

Zechariah 5 :1 Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. 3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. 4 I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof. 5 Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth. 6 And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth. 7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah. 8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof. 9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven. 10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah? 11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.

Zechariah 6 :1 And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass.2 In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses; 3 And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses. 4 Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord? 5 And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the LORD of all the earth. 6 The black horses which are therein go forth into the north country; and the white go forth after them; and the grisled go forth toward the south country.

Matthew 2 :9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

Matthew 3 :16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Matthew 17 :1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. 3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. 4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

Matthew 16 :13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

Acts 1 :9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Acts 9 :1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. 3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: 4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. 7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. 8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.

Acts 10 :11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, 31 And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. 32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.

Acts 12 :1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) 4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. 6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. 7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. 8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. 9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. 10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. 11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the LORD hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

1 Corinthians 9 :5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

2 Corinthians 12 :1 It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) 4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
