Compassionate Activism and Mass Consciousness

Introduction

Greetings USED KARMA readers!  This past cycle I attended two fascinating conferences sponsored by The Learning Alliance here in New York City, “Engaging the World With Compassion” and “Freeing the Media.” [click here for Freeing the Media Summary written for the CPSR] The first conference consisted of several different workshops where people shared experiences relating to healing and compassionate action.  The second conference focused on control of the mainstream media by large multinational media conglomerates with right-wing fascistic agendas.  (Have you ever noticed how REAL leftist commentators are completely missing from electronic media news?)  Both of these conferences were widely attended by interesting, intelligent and thoughtful leftist people from all over North America.  The energy in all the working groups and plenary sessions I attended was palpable.

The Need to Form Coalitions

Both conferences stressed the need to build alternative coalitions for political and social activism.  The “Freeing the Media” conference was addressed personally by  Subcommandante Marcos, leader of the Chiapas rebels in Mexico, in a videotaped message [click here for text].  Subcommandante Marcos is working to establish global coalitions to free the media from corporate control so the voices of oppressed indigenous peoples around the globe can be heard.

Currently the mainstream media promotes its own “synergistic” corporate interests.  Actual news has disappeared from the tube completely.  Rather, the news has evolved into a form of entertainment, a vehicle to advertise the other offerings of the giant media conglomerates, such as books, movies, records and the rest of the entertainment business.  Important issues regarding social oppression are conveniently ignored by the purveyors of the oppression and their world government sponsors/co-conspirators.

Inspired by the “Media and Democracy” conference that took place last fall in San Francisco, “Freeing the Media” was organized to begin the process of creating the coalitions that will allow people all over the world to lobby for free and fair access to the media, especially the news.  The conference organizers, two capable people named Greg Reggiaro and Jessica Glass, intend to continue the process with further conferences and follow-up working groups.  Jeff Cohen of FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) declared: “We are a movement, not a market!”

I see this as evidence confirming certain earlier predictions made in this column regarding mass recognition of the power of mass consciousness.  The best way to organize mass consciousness is to wrest control of mass media from the incestuously-operated global media fascists.  This is why it is so critically important to keep informed of changes in US telecommunications policy.

Speaking of US telecommunications policy, something happened recently here in New York you should know about.  At the “Freeing the Media” conference a woman (whose name I did not get) said she had recently called in to a New York public  radio show called “On The Media” (hosted by Alex Jones) when Mike Wallace was a guest.  She asked Wallace why 60 Minutes did not do any stories last year on the telecommunications policy underlying the 1996 Telecommunications Act.  He replied that the subject was too complicated.  When the caller pointed out the profound impact this legislation will have on the lives of all Americans, Wallace replied “I'd be a damn fool if I didn't cover it.”  Therefore, this woman suggested that people write to Mike Wallace reminding him of his public statement that he'd “be a damn fool” if 60 Minutes fails to do a story on telecommunications policy.  She pointed to me and said that the CPSR should send one such letter.

The Power of Mass Consciousness

Now back to the power of mass consciousness.  Even with what little international  information gets reported in our censored press, it is clear that major changes are taking place quickly around the planet.  A few moons ago I advised watching for rapid changes of power in governments throughout the world.  Recent examples validating this prediction abound in the daily press.

For example, last month Ecuador jumped into the fray, validating my predictions regarding rapid changes in governmental power.  Ecuador's president, Abdala Bucaram, was deposed after serving just seven months.  Ecuador's people were outraged by his corrupt and inappropriate behavior.  Urged on by the people, the Ecuadorian Congress voted to remove the president from office on the grounds of mental incompetence.  Zaire is also in chaos.  Scores of people have been protesting in Belgrade for free and fair access to the media.  There was a massive labor strike in France.  The list goes on and on.

Here in New York City the activists are organizing and taking their causes to the street.  Just last month there were dozens of public demonstrations in the streets.  I saw a group of demonstrators chanting outside a municipal building in lower Manhattan shouting “We're gay!  We're poor!”  I thought “Wow - everybody is organizing!  There was a demonstration in front of City Hall to preserve rent stabilization for poor tenants.  There was a demonstration in front of the Federal Building on the 21st anniversary of Leonard Peltier's extradition from Canada.

For those of you who may be wondering, Leonard Peltier is an American Indian activist and political leader who is a political prisoner of the United States.  Since his extradition, he has been imprisoned on trumped up charges of aiding and abetting murder.  He was originally charged with murder, but the Government finally figured out those charges were so lame they would never stick in a court of law.  Leonard Peltier has never been tried - a flagrant violation of the Constitutional right to a speedy criminal trial.  Yet the mainstream media hardly ever reports on his story.

FAIR sponsored demonstrations to protest the media's snow job regarding the CIA's importing crack into this country and selling it in poor minority communities. When the San Jose Mercury News broke this story last fall, The New York Times, The LA Times and the Washington Post ran articles disparaging it.  On February 17, the official observance of President's Day, FAIR staged protests in all three cities in front of the papers' offices.

There were numerous other protests in Manhattan alone regarding a variety of important issues.  Please write me at mgordon@pipeline.com and let me know about public protests and organized political demonstrations in your community.

Personal Observations on Jupiter Transiting the Twelfth House

Tony Dickey says the best way to learn astrology is to study your own chart.  In doing so, it is important to study and understand your transits as well as your natal chart.  Your natal chart is a snapshot of where the planets were the moment you were born.  This is your personal map, providing information about your personality, your family, your health, your career, and many other aspects of your life.

Since the planets continue to move after you are born, it is possible to compare a natal chart with the sky as it is now (or yesterday or tomorrow or any time you want to examine).  As the planets move (remember, transit means move) across the sky they travel through different houses of your natal chart and form aspects to your natal planets.  Planets with small solar orbits, such as Mercury and the Moon, travel quickly through your natal chart, making several transits through all of your houses throughout the course of your life.  Planets with large orbits, such as Neptune and Pluto, move so slowly through a natal chart that they never make it through all the houses of a natal chart.  Pluto's 360-year orbit greatly exceeds the average human lifespan.  Therefore Pluto only travels through a few houses in a person's chart, spending several years in one house before moving on.  The Moon, on the other hand, goes through all our natal houses in one year.

The Zodiac houses govern different areas of our lives.  Here is a brief overview of astrological house meanings:

First House:  Persona, physical appearance, beginnings

Second House: Values, money, finances

Third House:  Communication, immediate environment, siblings

Fourth House:  Home, family, security

Fifth House:  Ego, entertainment, enjoyment, children

Sixth House:  Health, work, daily routines

Seventh House: Partners, marriage, one-on-one relationships

Eighth House:  Taxes, death, transformation

Ninth House:  Travel, philosophy, higher education

Tenth House:  Career, profession, public image

Eleventh House: Group endeavors, aspirations, friendship

Twelfth House: The subconscious, karma, self-undoing

Jupiter's orbit around the Sun is approximately twelve years.  Thus Jupiter spends about a year in each house of a person's chart.  Jupiter is the planet of expansion and good luck.  It is a large, powerful planet that exerts a beneficial influence wherever it travels.  Since the twelfth house is the house of karma, when Jupiter travels through it the individual reaps the benefits of their karma.  In addition, one receives benefits from one's subconscious mind and receives Jupiter's help in breaking self-destructive patterns.

Jupiter entered my twelfth house a few months ago, and I would like to share some observations about how this transit is affecting my life.  The most noticeable thing is that I have been meeting many people with whom I feel an instant soul recognition.  That is, I am aware that these are people I have known before.  While this occurs routinely throughout a person's life, the interesting thing about Jupiter in the twelfth house is that all of the prior karmic connections I am re-establishing are positive ones.  But that is not the strangest part.  Virtually all of the people I have met with whom I feel an instant rapport and for whom I feel an old love also feel the same way about me.  In other words, most of the karmic reconnections are with people who consciously recognize a prior karmic connection.

In addition, it is clear to us (myself and the old friends I am encountering in new physical forms) that we are coming together now for important projects involving world peace, social justice and meaningful social and economic reform.  There is a network of activists and social crusaders who have worked together in past lives to galvanize mass consciousness and institute social and political reforms on a planetary-wide scale.  If you are reading these words, then you are part of this team.

Therefore I urge you all to inform yourselves on important social and political issues affecting your communities.  Use your voice - organize, vote, write letters, attend public meetings, review independent and alternative media sources, form coalitions, pray  and stand up for the rights of oppressed people everyone.  Remember, as long as anyone on this planet is oppressed, no one on this planet is free.
